The Nightingale

Sydney Travelling Film Festival Film 15-18 February 2019

Acclaimed Australian director Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) won numerous awards at Venice for her impressive second feature, The Nightingale - an uncompromising, historical revenge tale.
WINNER: SPECIAL JURY PRIZE AND BEST YOUNG ACTOR PRIZE, VENICE FILM FESTIVAL 2018
SELECTED: SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2019

Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones) is Clare, a young Irish convict in 1890s Van Diemen’s Land. It’s not an easy life, but there is hope, until a horrific incident seemingly destroys her chance of happiness. She heads out into the wild to seek a brutal reckoning. The Nightingale, filmed in Tasmania’s stunning landscape, features outstanding performances, including Elcho Islander Baykali Ganambarr as Billy.

At the core of Kent’s remarkable film is Clare and Billy’s evolving relationship, the graceful, moving heart of this tragic tale that simultaneously explores the impact of colonialism and displacement.

The brutality of Tasmania’s penal colonies is laid bare as Jennifer Kent jettisons make-believe monsters for real ones. – The Guardian
