Shoplifters

Sydney Travelling Film Festival Film 15-18 February 2019

Hirokazu Kore-eda's (After Life; Nobody Knows) latest masterpiece is about an impoverished family of affectionate misfits who commit petty crimes to survive.
WINNER: PALME D’OR, CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2018; BEST FEATURE FILM, ASIA PACIFIC SCREEN AWARDS 2018
SELECTED: PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD, TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL 2018

Following one of their regular, carefully choreographed shoplifting sessions, the Fagin-like Osamu and his young accomplice come across a little girl shivering in the cold. Initially reluctant, the family takes the girl in when they discover the neglect she’s suffered. Despite their struggles in keeping afloat, they find comfort and happiness in each other and in their simple life. A film built on beautifully observed and richly resonant moments, Shoplifters is at once delightful, funny and heartbreaking, and the deserving winner of the biggest prize in world cinema.

It's impossible to experience the deep-seated compassion of this film and not be moved to tears. – Rolling Stone
